Strolling through TTSPCA one lovely Saturday morning, I was distraught. I could not decide. So many kittens, so many faces, so many personalities, so many ages, and so many differences. I had settled the night before on an all black female kitten with green eyes about 2 months old. The only black cats they had were boys with yellow-ish eyes, and they were 6 to 8 months old. Babies still in my eyes, but they were treated like the “big cats”. I looked around, and around, and around…for quite some time. I asked many questions, looked at many cats and kittens and still didn’t know what to do. Should I settle for a kitten that’s not black or should I take an older cat? The crew suggested I went in to meet him at least..

Upon entering, I was ambushed. A black kitty with a toe fetish attacked my feet, and a beautiful girl who already had a home tugged at every piece of jewellery on me. I moved about a bit, and the black kitty with the toe fetish followed. The jewellery-lover then became pre-occupied with someone else. I sat down and before I knew it, Mr. Toe-Fetish was on my lap, purring relentlessly. I stayed with him a bit and when I decided to leave, he stood up on two legs against my knees. That’s when I knew. I looked at him, asked him if he wanted to go home with me when he gave a loving stare I decided that I’ll name him “Charms”.

Next thing I knew, I was signing adoption papers and he was in a box in the car. I was instructed to leave him in the car with the A/C running (as it’s quite hot here) when I explained that I needed to get a few things for him. I was also told he’d prefer the box than anything else as the car was a new and scary environment. So, the plan was, collect some things and then get him settled. Before I could cash, I got a call saying he was out of the box and playing about. Cats usually don’t like car rides. He was fine. We had a few laughs as he was fascinated with the cold air vents and we learned he didn’t like the sun. I’m guessing he doesn’t want a tan. Walking between the front and back seats purring, he discovered some comfortable spots on the floor of the car. Scared kitty? I think not. And our journey continued…

I had to go to class, so my loving trustee kept him while I was exhaustfully pounding away at the books. I had learned that he settled down quite well and really couldn’t be bothered with the change of environments. My class was long but productive and I just couldn’t wait to get home and get to bed. The journey home wasn’t too long and Charms and I got some bonding time.

When we got home, there were a lot of very excited kids, so we decided to put him in the box and take him in quietly. I got inside, took him to my room, and opened the box. He jumped out and walked about like he knew the place. Jumped on the bed, walked around, inspected every corner and he settled right in. The kids were outside and we anxious to see him and I was a bit nervous as it’s a new environment and everything may be a bit overwhelming… Overwhelming? He was playing with them! So while I unpacked him and got him settled, he had chosen his favourite toy, used his litter box and acknowledged the food. And I was worried about him and how he’d settle in…

And the journey continues…
